4 - Get 30 minutes of exercise every day.

Regular physical activity decreases the risk of death from heart disease, lowers the risk of developing diabetes, and is associated with a decreased risk of colon cancer. It also helps prevent high blood pressure and helps you lose weight and keep it off.

~ Think of yourself as an active person.
~ Make physical activity a part of your everyday routine. Go for brisk walks. Ride a bike. Dance. Do chores around the house and in the yard. take the stairs instead of the elevator. Rake leaves.
~ Get 30 minutes of activity that makes you breathe harder, on most or all days of the week. If you can't be active for 30 minutes all at once, get at least 10 minutes of endurance activity at a time.

Yeah, I suck at this one. I have tried, and sadly, have failed. So every day I try again. For a while the boys were talking walks every night, where my husband was walking and my son was on his scooter. I joined them one night, and discovered that my husband would walk faster to pass the Boy, who would then race ahead of my husband. It was like those sprints where the person in the back speeds up to become the person in the front. And I got winded doing it.

The winding worried me. So I'm committing to more walks with my family.

What do you do to incorporate exercise into your day?

3 Make the most of your commute

Use your morning commuting time to relax, feel good, and make the transition from home to work and back.
~Listen to books on tape. You might listen to a novel, language tapes, or an inspirational recording. Many public libraries have audio books. (NB: this was printed before iTunes and podcasts. I'd add them to the list as well.)
~Be a discriminating listener. Avoid radio shows that make you feel annoyed and that waste your time.
~Spend some time in silence. Revisit your day, think about what's ahead, and spend time in your thoughts.
~If possible, commute with someone you like one or two days a week.
~If you can, take public transportation. Use the time to read and reflect on your day.

My commute...is non-existent. I do have a minute walk over to daycare in the evenings, and a five minute walk back with a slowpoke son. That's about it. And I can tell that I really do need more time than that minute walk to decompress from the work day, and get back into the "mommy mode" portion of my life. We're working on that as we fall into a school routine. I think I might take a longer walk, looping the street once before picking up my child. Hey, exercise *and* time for a brain switch! Bonus!

So what do you do from here to there?

2. Cut back on caffeine.

Coffee tastes great and it's safe to drink in moderation. But too much caffeine can make you irritable. It can also upset your stomach and disturb your sleep. Medical experts recommend that you consume no more than 300 milligrams of caffeine a day. That's the equivalent of about two cups of brewed coffee.

Start feeling better today by moderating your intake of coffee, caffeinated tea, and soft drinks with caffeine.

I've had a peach for breakfast, along with my usual cup of coffee. What is of interest to me about it is that the coffeemaker tells me that my one Capi mug is equivalent to two cups. So watch your portions, people!

Also, This is one I've already done. I have my coffee, an occasional chai, and that's it. On a rare occasion I'll have a soda (fully leaded, thank you, if I'm going to do it), or fully leaded tea...until lunch. Having it with dinner can keep me up crazy hours, and I'm rather fond of my sleep. My drink du jour these days is water, iced.

How about you? How's your caffeine habit?

As I clean my office of dust and crap, I've gone through my books as I mentioned last week. Among the mess I re-discovered a gem from the folks I work with--actually, from the company they contract to help us with work/life balance. Occasionally I pick up one of the free items. This was one of them.

It's a little book of 100 ways to feel better everyday. If I read a page a day, I'd read the book three times over in a year. However, I don't want to do that.

I want to share them with you. Because I'm share-y that way.

A lot of these will be "well, duh" and "I can't do that" stuff. but I hope that something in here might help someone. Just in case. Cause I think all of you deserve to feel good.

Let's get started, shall we?

FEELING GOOD

1. Start your morning off right.
Breakfast boosts memory, improves your mood, and can help control your weight. A number of research studies have found that students who eat breakfast score higher on tests. The same is true for adults. People who eat breakfast also are generally thinner. Start the day with a healthy breakfast like high-fiber cereal or oatmeal and a glass of juice. If you're not much of a breakfast eater, try having a "smoothie" for your morning meal--blend a banana, low-fat yogurt, and orange juice together.

So, what did you have for breakfast?
