The More You Know
Jan. 18th, 2010 03:29 pmRead a blog today--usually about knitting, but not this post.
This post is about Haiti, and the time this blogger spent there with her husband and a class from the school where they worked. It paints another picture of Haiti, and the people who live there. This picture does not include earthquake aftermath, but has smiling faces and provides a peek, however small, into what their work there provided then.
The blogger points out that it's good, what we're doing now. Providing money. Helping clear debris, get food and medicine and doctors to the people that need it. Making the ways to get it to the people. And raising awareness about this country as our neighbor.
As she says in the end of her blog, "Learn something about this neighbor of ours. Knowledge is power, but knowledge is also responsibility. We can be the people who care, who know, and who understand, but only if we read and educate ourselves. Giving is good. Giving is NECESSARY. But giving will not be enough in the long term. Haiti needs to become part of our national consciousness, not just because of its current heartrending circumstance, but because it is the only right way to go."
I have nothing to add.
