imjustlori: (knitting)
(If you're not a Raveler, this might not make sense)

Jess, Casey, and M-H, the crew that run Ravelry, had to do a VERY hard thing this week. They had to disband a group. This came after a lot of work on their side to get the moderators of the group to work with them to try to correct the problems they were seeing within the group as it formed--mostly, the group was not going to "Be Excellent to Each Other", as is often bantered around. As the mods could not make this happen on their group, the decision was made to disband it, and the moderators of that group are not allowed to mod any other like-minded groups (of which there are several out there).

A small minority of a small group (compared to Rav itself) are obviously upset. They were given 24 hours to say goodby to each other on their group before it was shut down. They spent a GOOD deal of that time calling the owners (Jess and Casey) and staff (M-H) of Ravelry names and calling foul, freedom of speech, and so on. There was even a comparison to a Nazi. Unfortunately, this anger has begun flooding to venues outside of Ravelry.

Making the decision to stop someone's fun because it's harmful to the group is a hard one to do, especially when the someone is very, very vocal. I know (oh LORD, how I know). Having these vocal people then turn on you can tear you up inside. Small group, lots of angry words.

In response, a thread was started in one of the Big Six groups to give some love to the trio that run this massive site, to let them know that all their hard work--the amazing coding, the Rav store, the coodination of meetups at ALL major fiber events in the USA, and the work to keep the hundreds of groups within the guidelines laid out by them to keep things civil and allow everyone to Be Excellent To Each Other--all of it, we are grateful for.

So, if you are on Ravelry, I ask you to please go here And give a little love. I know my knitting would not be what it is now without their work.

(feel free to pass along this post)
